Carousel of Calais at Christmas

Fantastic food and wine shopping, streets twinkling with glittering lights, an authentic Christmas market and a programme of festive events for all the family, delicious restaurants and – a dragon. It can only be Calais at Christmas.

Each year the town goes all out festive with a programme of events to tempt you to come and visit and enjoy a warm welcome. It’s just a short hop across, or under, the English Channel – no airport chaos – and you’ll find yourself in Calais town which has undergone a programme of renovation in the last couple of years with a sensational new seafront esplanade, spruced up monuments and a plethora of new restaurant openings.

It’s an ideal day out, or a lovely relaxing weekend at Christmas with heaps to see and do. Here’s what to see and do in Calais at Christmas …

Christmas Shopping in Calais – fill your boots!

Take the car and fill your boot with all you could wish for when it comes to shopping for great French food and wine. And yes, you can take cheese, meat and fish to the UK from France (it’s only the other way that there’s an issue with fresh produce).

And you will find that there are some seriously scrumptious gourmet food shops in Calais. At Maison des Fromages (1 Rue André Gerschell) – they have the most mouth-watering cheeses available. Shop until you drop in the town for chocolate, cassoulet, delicious patés and rillettes, sweets, biscuits and cakes. In rue Royale you’ll find some lovely boutiques and gift shops. Then there are the huge hypermarkets (Carrefour in Calais is the largest supermarket in the region), Cité Europe international shopping centre is on the outskirts of Calais, next to Le Shuttle terminal and there are several wine warehouses for all your French wines and spirits.

For something a bit different, Calais Lace Museum is a short walk from the centre of town and it’s well worth a visit. Celebrating the city’s famous lace industry, there’s a fascinating exhibition of haut couture, lingerie and lacy costumes through the ages. Plus, there’s a lovely shop, perfect for gifts that are just a little bit different. And if you’re looking for authentic crafts and something special for those whom you never know what to buy, then the gift shops and Christmas market are bound to offer unique presents with French flair.

You can also make savings on your purchases if you’re a non-EU resident. You can claim back the VAT on goods purchased for personal use and taken back to the UK from a retailer offering tax-free shopping (for example wine, clothes and jewellery shops) and where goods total more than £100. Ask for a VAT refund form when you buy, get your form stamped at customs before you leave France, and use the PABLO electronic VAT refund processing system at Le Shuttle and Calais Port.

The Christmas market and festive events

First – meet a dragon and wish him a Merry Christmas – or Joyeux Noel. Dragons speak several languages including English! From November 26 2023, to January 7 2024, the great winged dragon of Calais, all 82 feet long of him, will roam the seafront carrying passengers on his back and making merry! The dragon lives in a glass lair on the beach front, where you’ll also find a café and a shop full of whimsical gifts. Book your dragon ride tickets online (in English): compagniedudragon.com/en

The Christmas lights and illuminations will be sparkling in streets, squares and on the facades of buildings from November 25 2023 to 7 January 2024. And during this time there will also be a toboggan run plus a covered skating rink (bring your own gloves!) – get your skates on for this one! Actually, hire them at the skating rink – it’s just €2 for 30 minutes and the perfect way for kids to let off steam with all the excitement of the season going on.

The Christmas market takes place at the Place du Théâtre from 9-17 December with around 40 chalets selling gifts. A short stroll will bring you to Place d’Armes where traditional chalets offer street food, and a vintage 1900-style, double decker carousel. And as you wander the glittering Christmas market sip a vin chaud or a hot chocolate, enjoy a fluffy waffle or a tasty plate of alpine favourite – tartiflette, and enjoy the cosy ambiance.

Take a break

Friendly and hospitable restaurants serve a special winter menu throughout the season – from hearty stews and soups to gastronomic delights and the freshest of fresh fish and seafood.

You can look forward to a warm welcome, delicious festive fair, enchanting Christmas markets and a sprinkle of Christmas magic in Calais this December.

`Avignon Christmas market Celebrate Christmas in Provence! Vaucluse is world famous for its rolling fields of lavender, impressive mountain ranges and the fine wines produced in lush vineyards, not to mention the impossibly pretty perched villages that pepper the countryside. At its heart is Avignon, which was the seat of the papacy in the 14th century and where the Palace of the Popes is still the jewel in the crown of this magnificent historic walled city. But, go at Christmas and you’ll find Vaucluse takes on a very special sparkle. Discover the most lovely Christmas markets of Provence in historic towns and pretty villages – festive, feel good and utterly fabulous!

Christmas in Vaucluse

Santon display at Carpentras, Provence

In the south of France, they love their Santons, ‘little saints’, of Provence that are produced and feature in almost every home during the Christmas season. These often intricate nativity figures are traditionally made from clay, hand-painted and often painted as religious figures or in local costume. It’s a custom dating back to the Middle Ages that originated in Italy and spread France. During the French Revolution religious expression was frowned upon so people began making their own crèche figurines secretly at home.

Denis Voeux, Santon maker at Seguret, Provence

No visit to Vaucluse in December is complete without a visit to a santon fair or the studio of a santonier like that of Denis Voeux in Séguret. And it’s a great chance to buy a ‘Santon’ to take home. (Read more about Santons in The Good Life France Magazine, Issue 36, which is free to read).

Cultural, fun and foodie activities

Vaucluse celebrates Christmas with a wealth of cultural and fun activities. Music, craft workshops, children’s activities, firework displays, and other events take place across the region. With a whole host of concerts, activities and events to accompany them, these pretty and vibrant Christmas markets are the ideal way to enter into the spirit of the season.

Provence is renowned for its food and drink and at Christmas it’s traditional to enjoy les ‘treize desserts’ – thirteen desserts! Consisting of crysallised fruit, nuts, nougat and orange blossom flavoured fougasse. It’s a delicious custom and you’ll find sweet versions of this famous Christmas foodie tradition in chocolateries and patisseries – the perfect gift for sharing.

Avignon Christmas markets

The streets of Avignon are twinkling and festive and throughout December, a traditional Christmas market takes place in the Place Saint-Jean le Vieux. It’s the perfect place to discover Provençal Christmas traditions with about 30 wooden chalets offering all manner of gift ideas and tempting winter treats. You’ll find traditional santons, jewellery, decorative gifts and accessories and beautiful household linens. If all that shopping makes you peckish, there are gastronomic specialities such as earthy truffles, delicious chocolates and plentiful wine and champagne on offer too.

At the Carmes Cloister, in the very heart of Avignon, another event takes place over two weekends and offers completely local and craft-based market stalls. This eco-responsible market features the work of 80 local artisans, creators and producers and some 20 special events for every age group, with concerts, face-painting for children and shows all in this magical historical setting. Visitors can enjoy a glass of mulled wine, Alsatian biscuits and thoroughly embrace the magic of Christmas.

By the Canals of l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

The Christmas market in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue plays host to a wide range of festivities throughout December including a fabulous light show on the canals that criss cross the town. As well as many craft stalls, there are all sorts of events running in the village. Children’s activities run from 3pm to 6pm most days with concerts from 6.30pm to 10pm. Children can write letters to Santa, play board games, decorate Christmas trees, have their faces painted with festive designs, take part in festive colouring activities and create balloon sculptures. Father Christmas will of course also be paying a visit. A free tourist train runs on some days and evening concerts include rock, pop, jazz and DJ led music, as well as festive songs.

La Mirande 5* Hotel in Avignon

The Christmas market in La Mirande features ceramics, art, textiles, jewellery, cosmetics, perfumes and soaps among many other gift ideas. Food stalls offer seasonal and regional delicacies, such as the Buche de Noël, or chocolate Yule log, and savoury dishes flavoured with truffles. Quintessentially French dishes such as Crêpes Suzettes will warm you up and there’s even a chance to take part in a cookery class and make your own Buche de Noël filled with praline. And don’t miss the chance to enjoy a delicious hot chocolate in the courtyard or lobby of this exquisite 5* hotel.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

In Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Tauléjades is a food market with a distinctly Christmas flavour. An excellent opportunity to meet the wine-growers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and pick a few bottles for your end-of-year celebrations, but also to meet producers from all over France, all of them from the “Slow Food” movement (Comté cheese, Cancale oysters, etc). Tasting workshops (wine & spices, wine & chocolate…) will also be running throughout the day, and don’t miss the gourmet dinner on the “pepper & spices” theme, served with Châteuneuf-du-Pape wines on the Friday night!

Pernes-les-Fontaines Christmas market

A traditional Provençale Christmas market takes place for one day in Pernes-les-Fontaines, known for its 40 fountains and the many artisan workshops in the quaint streets of the town centre. Organised by the local folklore society it focuses on food and drink and in particular the ingredients needed for a traditional Provençal Christmas meal served on Christmas Eve with 13 different desserts. Representing the 12 apostles and Jesus, these include dried fruits and nuts, fresh fruits, sweets, biscuits and, of course, the Buche de Noël.

Orange Christmas Market

In the pretty town of Orange, against the backdrop of its UNESCO listed Roman heritage, are the twinkling lights of the town’s Christmas market. With stalls selling gifts, sweet treats and wine there will also be fanfares, parades, choral events and workshops.

Arras Christmas Market

In the north of France, they take their Christmas markets seriously! And in the region of Pas-de-Calais these fabulously festive and friendly events are a great way to discover the food specialties and artisan-made products of France whilst you enjoy the magic of a colourful, vibrant Christmas market.

Pretty much every large town hosts a Christmas market throughout December and some even start earlier. Here are some of the best Christmas markets in Pas-de-Calais – perfect for the whole family, great for gifts that are different, for foodies and for those who love a sprinkle of festive fun!

Arras: Winter wonderland

Arras Christmas market is one of the biggest and best Christmas markets in France. On the red-carpeted Grand’Place in the centre of this historic city, you’ll discover more than 100 traditional wooden chalets where you can shop for everything deliciously French, from regional specialities to foie gras, wine and liqueurs, and the most mouth-watering sweets. You’ll also find fabulous and unique gifts. Every stall is hand-picked for its artisan and superior craft quality products – no mass-produced merchandise here. Ride the Ferris wheel for a bird’s eye view over the festive fun, pop into the Palace of Ice – where you’ll find amazing ice sculptures, whiz around the skating rink or hop on the musical carousel.  And when you are ready for a break, sip a mulled wine or steaming hot chocolate at the traditional German Winter Bar, indulge in champagne and oysters, or warm up with regional street food specialities like.

Practical details: 6 free car parks 10 minutes from the city centre on foot. A free electric shuttle criss crosses the city centre, every 10 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Plus, two (paid) underground car parks

Béthune: Christmas town!

Bethune Christmas market

In the historic cobbled Grand’Place of Béthune, at the foot of the UNESCO-listed Belfry, the traditional style Bethune Christmas market is traditional and friendly. Taste local specialties like mulled wine and tartiflette, a huge steaming bowl of cheesy scrumptiousness and pretty much irresistible. You’ll find stands selling artisan-made products including wooden toys and handmade jewellery. There’s a children’s carousel, workshops, and concerts. Gratify your gastronomic desires and visit the local food shops in the town, and stock up on regional cheeses like the scrumptiously stinky Maroilles! And for a truly special break, head to the nearby Chateau de Beaulieu, just 20 minutes by car. The hotel has two restaurants, one has 2 Michelin Stars – Restaurant Christophe Dufossé, and the other is a brasserie style. Absolutely delicious.

Le Touquet Paris-Plage – Sparkles galore

Christmas lights cover the bandstand in Le Touquet

In December, the seaside resort of Le Touquet is transformed into a Christmas village. As you enter Le Touquet, you’ll be welcomed by the sight of the Christmas village and the lovely band stand in the Parc des Pins, covered in thousands of twinkly lights. It is the perfect place for a selfie (and there are even props like fun hats for visitors to use in their photos). The roads are lined with Christmas trees and more lights and the whole place twinkles and charms with its celebratory festive spirit.

There are plenty of places to stop for a hot chocolate, glass of wine or Champagne – and the bar at the art deco Westminster Hotel serves all three in style!

Calais lights up for winter!

The streets of Calais are lit up with festive decorations and special illuminations to celebrate the end of year holidays. It’s the perfect small city to leave the car behind and take a stroll. The Place d’Armes is transformed into a Christmas village: carousel from the 1900s, decorated chalets and the Place du Théâtre is lined with stands of local producers and artisans, and there are concerts, street shows and other entertainment between these two historic squares.

There’s an ice-skating rink and important historical buildings, including the Church of Notre-Dame, are illuminated. Restaurants and cafes offer special holiday menus, highlighting the flavours of local cuisine. And while you’re there, don’t miss the chance to get acquainted with the Dragon of Calais who will be celebrating Christmas too no doubt!

Street in Strasbourg lit up for Christmas with Chandeliers hanging over the cobbled road

Strasbourg isn’t just one of the most beautiful cities in France. It’s also home to the “Christkindelsmärik” a spectacular Christmas market and one of the oldest in Europe. It’s where you’ll find the highest Christmas tree in Europe, and if that’s not enough to bring you out in a severe dose of Christmas fever, there are several more Christmas markets in the city. Oh yes, it’s also the most illuminated city in Europe in December. No wonder it’s called the “Capital of Christmas”. A former winner of “Best European Christmas market destination” – here’s all you need to know about Strasbourg at Christmas…

History of Strasbourg Christmas Market

It began in 1570 in front of the Gothic Cathedral with just a few stands. Today there are more than 300 market stalls spread throughout the city. The heart of the market remains in Place Broglie (where it moved to in 1870) and Place de la Cathédrale, the lovely medieval square in front of Strasbourg’s graceful Gothic cathedral.

What makes Strasbourg Christmas Market so special

Christmas chalets lit up for Christmas in front of the Gothic cathedral of Strasbourg

Strasbourg’s Christmas atmosphere really is unique. The city is adorned in its most beautiful finery, the houses are richly decorated and at nightfall the illuminations are nothing short of astonishing. The “Carré d’Or” (the “Golden Square” which encompasses the city’s prettiest streets) is especially spectacular. Don’t miss the rue des Hallebardes, with its magnificent crystal chandeliers hanging in glass boxes above the street – only in France!

Strasbourg Cathedral lit up for ChristmasAnd, don’t forget to pop into the pharmacy at No. 10 Place de la Cathédrale. It’s the oldest pharmacy in France and well worth stopping off for. This lovely area is full of pretty houses including the Maison Kamerzell built in 1571, a fabulous example of Renaissance architecture.

At the heart of this latticework of Christmas lights, the Cathedral is bathed in golden light. Throughout December, Strasbourg is the most illuminated city in Europe – if you’re a fan of Christmas, you’re going to love it.

Ferris Wheel and Christmas chalets at Mulhouse Christmas Market

Since it began in 1990, Mulhouse Christmas Market has grown to be one of the most popular and authentic Christmas Markets in Alsace. And that’s not easy. Up against Strasbourg and Colmar, Mulhouse had to work at being different in order to stand out – so they made it one of the most colourful markets in France. This town literally puts on its finest festive attire at Christmas. We discover all about the Mulhouse Christmas market and what to see and do in the area…

Mulhouse Christmas Market 2024

Textile artworks and cloth cover the Mulhouse town hall at Christmas

At the heart of the textile industry in Alsace, Mulhouse creates a unique Christmas fabric each year in tribute to its proud heritage. The material is hung over the facades of the chalets selling lovely artisan gifts and delicious products at the Christmas market. The streets of the town centre are also decorated with this luxurious material. And the famous Renaissance former town hall is dressed up in it (above).

The Christmas market takes place on the Place de la Réunion, before the enormous neo-Gothic church of Saint-Etienne, the largest protestant building in France. The market, with around 100 chalets, has a reputation for its friendly atmosphere.

There’s a Ferris Wheel, huge Christmas tree – as tall as the one in Strasbourg at 30 metres – and the streets are teeming with twinkling fairy lights.

It’s a reproduction of an Alsacian village of the early 20th century created from old buildings that would otherwise be destroyed. There are ore than 70 buildings – from houses to farms, schools, railway stations and more, and a collection of 40,000 articles is on show.

Throughout December this unusual museum puts up 150 Christmas trees, window decorations and Christmas events. www.ecomusee.alsace/en/

If you love Christmas markets, fabulous architecture, streets lined with great shops and unique boutiques and great gastronomy – the Metz must be on your must-do list…

The city of Metz is in Moselle in Lorraine, north-eastern France (Alsace-Lorraine). It borders Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany, and you can reach it in less than an hour and a half by train from Paris. It’s definitely a year-round destination with the incredible Metz Pompidou, the more than 800 year old Gothic Cathedral with the third highest nave in France, museums, wonderful architecture and superb restaurants galore. But as Christmas approaches, Metz puts on its festive best, opens several Christmas markets including one dedicated solely to food, and lights up the Sentier des Lanternes – more about this magical light show in a minute…

Merry ChristMetz! Christmas markets galore

woman stands at a beautifully decorated food stall Christmas market Metz

Metz is Christmas central. Not just one Christmas market here. There are five Christmas markets spread around this compact city in a sort of ring around the great Gothic Cathedral. It’s easy to visit them all on foot or hop on the free navette buses that traverse the city.

Head to Place de la Republique for loads of traditional chalets specialising in local products and gorgeous gifts made by local artisans. There’s are two German Christmas Pyramid bars. You’ll find the aroma of mulled wine and hot chocolate is alluring and the sight of the lit carousel-like-tops rotating is mesmerising. Did you know that the German pyramid decorations were the pre-cursor to Christmas trees – which originated in neighbouring Alsace in the 16th century? If you happen to be at the Christmas market when the Meisenthal glassware chalet is open, don’t miss the chance to buy a Christmas bauble. They’re are famous in these parts and make wonderful family heirloom Christmas decorations.

In Place Saint-Louis there is a traditional gifts Christmas market where the scent of gingerbread will make you smile. There’s also a carousel. In Place d’Armes, there are more Christmas chalets. Plus there’s a Ferris Wheel from which you will have the most incredible views over the illuminated Cathedral. And in Place Saint-Jacques, there are beautiful specialist artisan products on offer from food to gifts. Meanwhile at Place de la Comédie the whole Christmas market is devoted to food. And it’s the perfect place to pop for a snack, aperitifs or a delicious meal. Food is cooked on site, and tables and chairs welcome you to stop for a break.

As if all this Christmas spirit is not enough – there is also the Sentier des Lanternes…

Sentier des Lanternes – a luminous Christmas event

Illuminated figures at Sentier des Lanternes Christmas light display, Metz

Around the beginning of November, a flurry of activity takes place over three weeks as the Lantern Trail – the sentier des Lanternes is set up. It transforms the Place Boufflers in the centre of Metz, a stone’s throw from the Christmas market in Place de la Republique. In 2010, inspired by the Night of Lights in Montreal, Canada, the tourist office created the first Lantern Trail. Since then, this luminous Christmas event has grown and grown. In 2021 it featured more than 1 million LED lights, 2000 lit up figures including a gingerbread house, and a 4 metre high Saint Nicolas on his donkey! There are 9 kilometres of cable involved on an area of 3000sqm.

Those are the statistics. But when you go, it’s all about the magic.

Metz’s Lantern Trail is enchanting. And no matter what your age, it will make you happy and give you that warm Christmassy feeling. The ‘lanterns’ are giant light sculptures – snowflakes, gingerbread men, elves, toy soldiers, lollipops, teddy bears, rabbits on scooters. Trees are decorated with LED lights so that they look as if they have come from the Magic Faraway Forest. It’s like your dream of Christmas came true, and you woke up in a Christmas wonderland…

Christmas fare

Giant plastic bubble with tables and chairs, Metz, Moselle

The Messines – people from Metz – are hugely proud of their local produce. From Mirabelle plums to sensational wine, gorgeous glassware, there’s a lot for them to be proud of. Apart from the Christmas markets, there are shopping streets aplenty. Nip to the tourist office to pick up details of the best areas. But, don’t miss cobbled rue Taison which is beautifully decorated for Christmas and where a dragon hangs across the street! Named Graouly, the dragon is said to have lived in Metz, in an amphitheatre built by the Romans. It terrorised the inhabitants until the Bishop of Metz who became Saint Clement, drowned the monster in the River Seille.

Where to stay

There are plenty of hotels in the city but I like the 4* MGallery La Citadelle Hotel in a former 16th century military building for its superb décor and great restaurant (5 Ave Ney). The 3* Hotel de la Cathedrale is in two 17th century houses and once hosted writers Madame de Stael and Chateaubriand (Place de Chambre).

Where to eat

El Theatris in Place de la Comédie on the Petit Saulcy island in the centre of Metz is a gastronomic delight. This is a town of gourmands though, so you’ll find plenty of restaurants as you wander.

How to get there

TGV trains from Paris will get you there in just 1 hour 25 minutes.

Luxembourg airport (international flights) is one hour by car.

From Strasbourg, the train takes from 55 minutes. Nancy is from 48 minutes by train.

If you do take the train, leave time to see the station, next to Metz Pompidou Centre. It’s a listed historic building and is quite possibly the most beautiful train station in France. Built between 1905-1908 when Metz was under German rule, it was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II who had an apartment created there. The architecture is extraordinary and it has a Cathedral like to feel to it.

Facade of the Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte near Paris with Christmas trees lining the road to the grand doors

Christmas at the  Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte combines a historic, stunning castle with a fairy-tale-like festive display. In 1661, the famous French writer and poet Jean de la Fontaine wrote of the Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte:

The stage was set with green so lush, and by a hundred torches lit; Once curtain raised, all Vaux was hushed. All strove to please this King of ours: Music, cascades, lanterns and stars…

More than 350 years later, those guests who strove to please the King would certainly recognise the castle. And, de la Fontaine’s description would be unchanged other than that it is not a King who will thrill to the sight but visitors who will relish the music, cascades, lanterns and stars on show at Vaux at Christmas.

The fairy tale castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte at Christmas

Room in the Chateau de Vaux le Vicomte, decorated for Christmas

Just 35 minutes by train from Gare de l’Est in the centre of Paris brings you to the train station Verneuil l’Etang from where a shuttle bus whisks you to the historic 17th century Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte. It is an extraordinary castle, the blueprint for Versailles (in fact it was the start of the TV series Versailles) and drove a king mad with jealousy. Read the full history of the Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte.

At Christmas it takes on an extra layer of glitter and air of enchantment. The rooms are decorated with thousands of lights, garlands and baubles and this captivating castle presents a unique festive show.

Sparkles, twinkles, the smell of Christmas spices and chocolate, traditional carol songs and glowing lights will bring out your inner Santa. But this is no Disney castle, Vaux-le-Vicomte’s Christmas coat is traditional, classic, elegant and just a little kitsch, as the best Christmas’s should be.

Rooms are adorned with lights, Christmas trees and vintage toys, scented with cinnamon and chocolate, spices and sweet smells. It’s a unique presentation of Christmas in an incredible setting.

As you walk up the path to the chateau, it’s a wow moment. Glittering Christmas trees line the route to the grand doors that leads into the largest private domaine in France.

50 years of visitors

Incredibly the chateau was a wedding present to the current resident, Count Patrice de Voguë, in 1967. He has made it his life’s work to protect the castle for future generations. A chateau of this size isn’t easy or cheap to maintain. So, he opened the doors to the public in 1968, inspired by the British National Trust (which is entrusted with opening buildings of major interest to the public), and in particular by Highgrove House, home to Prince Charles.

The Count’s son Alexandre, who together with his brothers Ascanio and Jean-Charles now runs the estate, says that his father began the Christmas at the Chateau event in 2005. Again, he was inspired by Highgrove House. The event has become more and more popular over the years.

Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte Christmas 2024

What began as just a weekend event now attracts thousands of visitors. The Christmas festivities run from 16 November 2024 until 5 January 2025.

The most amazing Christmas decorations

Giant gingerbread cakes in the kitchen of the Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte

The castle has been decorated in style by interior designer Eric Naudin. He’s assisted by everyone at the Chateau, from the ladies who work in the gorgeous gift shop to the family themselves. Every year is a different theme. In 2018 vintage toys were borrowed from a specialist museum in Colmar, Alsace. In 2019 the theme is colour, every room a different shade, bright blues, soft whites and shades of pastel.

TAble laid for Christmas at the Chateau Vaux le Vicomte, decorations hang from every surface

There are 150 Christmas trees, more than a mile of garlands and around 15,000 decorations and lights. The trees are hung with the most beautiful baubles, soft teddies and snow white owls. By the way, if you like them pop to the gift shop where they have some for sale plus fabulous souvenirs that you’ll want to bring out for Christmas for years to come. Tables are laid for a festive feast with trees and ornaments, sparkling crystal and colourful macarons and extraordinary automatons. In the kitchen there’s a sugarplum fairy vibe with huge gingerbread cakes, giant rabbit footmen, dolls and fairies.

In the carriage museum Christmas carols play. And, there are tableaux of yesteryear’s Christmases with train sets, lights and Santa seated in an ancient carriage.

Every year the salon has a different, breathtaking presentation. It could be a giant teddy in a full sized balloon basket and balloon, a Ferris wheel or monumental revolving manger scene (2019).

Christmas at the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte

Tree-lined walkway through the garden of Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte, autumn leaves on the floor

And as dusk falls, the magic continues in the garden where you can take a carriage ride and enjoy thousands of twinkling lights. Take a walk in the enchanted wood and admire the gorgeous landscape that has wowed visitors for 350 years. It was originally designed by Louis XIV’s favourite gardener André Le Nôtre.

It’s not Disney but it is magical, authentic and exquisitely enchanting. Vaux-le-Vicomte at Christmas is where you’ll find a bucket load of festive charm.
